The digital infonnation provided by satellite remote sensing supplies spatial, spectral and temporal perceptions that aren't available from other sources .. lt represents one ofthe most recent and developed technical means for the study ofthe earth and of envlronmental sciences from space. Often it is lhe only source of data for observing natural processes over large areas in short to long time frames. Satellite images provide special efficacy in large scale applications. They provi de a perspective on constant change of geographic scale (national, regional and zona!), temporal scale and geosystems analysis scale. Greenway planning requires a broad array of spatial infonnation. For remotely-sensed spatial information to be useful for greenway planning, it must be of Iimited size and complexity, yet still meet accuracy standards of the overall database. It's most useful when it can be processed in a desktop computing environment. To meet these needs, a method was developed for rapid treatment of remotely-sensed data This method includes automatic steps (data statistical analysis, supervised and non-supervised classifications, local filtering, among others), and semi-automatic steps (chiefly computer aided visual analysis). Some experiences of digital image processing are presented to integrate spectral and semantic jnfornation related to land use/cover changes at the urban fringe ofthe Lisbon Metropolitan Area.pt_PT
