Psychologists face risks associated with the nature of their profession that lead to personal and professional wear and tear and influence their self-care, predisposition to burnout, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy beliefs. This study aimed to expand quantitative research and generate scientific evidence on these variables among psychologists in Portugal. It sought to explore the associations between self-care, burnout, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy beliefs. The mediating role of self-care in the relationship between emotional regulation and burnout was also tested. The study involved 520 participants (M = 39.96; SD = 9.20) who responded to four instruments: the Self-Care Assessment Scale for Psychologists (EAAP), the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT), the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (QRE), and the Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale (OSS). Correlation and mediation analyses were used to investigate the relationships between the variables. It was found that self-care is negatively associated with burnout and positively with emotional regulation and self-efficacy beliefs. Additionally, self-efficacy beliefs established positive associations with emotional regulation and negative with burnout. Emotional regulation was negatively associated with burnout. It was also observed that self-care mediates the relationship between emotional regulation and burnout. This research provides a basis for implementing effective strategies that benefit the health and well-being of psychologists, undedrlining the relevance of a comprehensive and systemic approach to the care of caregivers.
