The effects of marine invertebrate biodiversity and habitat condition on African mangrove and seagrass ecosystem functioning and services
Publication . Bento, Marta; Andrade, Paula Alexandra Costa Marçal Correia e; Paula, José Pavão Mendes de; Bandeira, Salomão
The main goal of this study was to assess the relationships among ecosystem condition and pres-sures, biodiversity, and ecosystem services (ES) provided by marine macroinvertebrates (MMI) in man-groves and seagrasses in the West and East African coast. Mozambique (MOZ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) were selected as case studies. This involved compiling and analysing available data from natural history collections, biodiversity records, and scientific literature from digital repositories. The study identified MMI species richness, taxonomic and functional diversity, and community structure in mangroves, seagrasses, and corals in MOZ and STP. Ecosystem condition and pressures, MMI provi-sioning, regulation and cultural services were assessed. Data gaps and biases were evaluated throughout the study. A conceptual model was developed to illustrate the links among ecosystem condition and pressures, MMI ecological functions, and the flow of their ES. The model adopts an ecosystem-based management approach for the sustainable use of these resources. Findings from this research offer fun-damental data and insights highlighting the need for a comprehensive strategy for the sustainable use of MMI ES. This strategy must consider the trade-offs associated with expanding seagrass and man-grove coverage, increasing the extent of protected areas, and addressing the adverse impacts of over-fishing and climate change.
