A case for virtue. Ethics, modern life, and the arts

In this dissertation we argue firstly that virtue is a concept that emerges from concrete practices, which is understood in narrative terms. Our second claim is that virtue is befitting to a context of moral pluralism, which characterizes liberal societies. We argue that virtues are socially embedded and real moral properties; its exemplars allow us not only to learn to be virtuous, but also to enable what we call cross-community dialogue. Then, we show the insufficiencies of so-called “liberal virtues” because of their essentially negative nature. Instead, we propose that cross-community dialogue constitutes a particular practice with a positive common good. This practice requires specific virtues: authenticity, empathic imagination, and attention. We describe these by looking at their misrepresentations, lying in their defect and excess. By so doing we will find the virtuous mean and exemplars of each. Narrative art and literary theory will prove crucial in this task because they allow us to examine our reactions to such representations and misrepresentations of virtue.
