<dcterms:accessRights>open access</dcterms:accessRights><dc:type>info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis</dc:type><dc:format>application/pdf</dc:format><dc:link>http://catalogo.ul.pt/F/?func=item-global&doc_library=ULB01&type=03&doc_number=000579305</dc:link><dc:subject>Haynes,Todd,1961-</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cinema - Taiwan - séc.20-21</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cinema - Estados Unidos da América - séc.20-21</dc:subject><dc:subject>Doenças</dc:subject><dc:subject>Narração</dc:subject><dc:subject>Teses de mestrado - 2010</dc:subject><dcterms:abstract>Taking the films Safe (by Todd Haynes) and The River (Tsai Ming-Liang) as a starting point, the motif of illness is analyzed in its connections with narrative and cinematic issues. Making use of literary and essayistic works, as well as the two directors` filmographies, two parallels are drawn: 1) between the linear progression incorporated in the representations of illness and the model of narrative causality, in the Aristotelian sense; 2) between clinic gaze and cinematic gaze, especially in what concerns the (necessary) difficulty of representing a transformation (the symptom) that takes place in the body. Despite Todd Haynes and Tsai Ming-Liang making very different uses of illness, they both fit a tradition that associates it with anomaly and metamorphosis; at the same time, they evade that tradition by not offering narrative closure and by formulating a problematic relation between knowledge and vision. In the way it directs the viewers`curiosity and attention, the motif of illness appears as revealing two distinct conceptions of cinema, by Haynes and by Tsai.</dcterms:abstract></record></value></md></mds><relations/><stream_ref><file_name>22184_ulfl073434_tm.pdf</file_name><file_extension>pdf</file_extension><mime_type>application/pdf</mime_type><directory_path>/digitool_storage/deposit-master/2010/04/29/file_1/22184</directory_path><file_id xsi:nil="true" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"/><storage_id>1006</storage_id><external_type>-1</external_type><file_size_bytes>13574218</file_size_bytes></stream_ref></xb:digital_entity></xb:digital_entity_call>
