Foram colhidos cores de sedimento vegetado e não vegetado para a determinação das concentrações de Zn, Cu, Cd e Pb e das razões isotópicas 206Pb/207Pb e 206Pb/208Pb em profundidade. Estes parâmetros foram também determinados nas plantas. As concentrações destes metais na biomassa subterrânea foram 1-3 ordens de grandeza superiores aos valores encontrados nas partes aéreas sugerindo uma reduzida transferência de metais para as folhas e caules. Os sedimentos colonizados pelas plantas apresentaram níveis de Zn, Cu, Cd e Pb mais elevados que os sedimentos sem vegetação. Os perfis verticais das razões 206Pb/207Pb e 206Pb/208Pb mostraram um decréscimo na direcção da superfície sugerindo o incremento da proporção de componentes antropogénicos de Pb face ao total. Estes sedimentos apresentaram uma assinatura isotópica de Pb similar à observada nas raízes, indicando que a retenção deste metal na planta não distingue isótopos de diferentes massas. Os factores de enriquecimento (FE=[Me]raiz/[Me]sedimento) calculados para cada camada sedimentar variaram em profundidade, indicando a existência de camadas preferenciais de acumulação de metais nas raízes de ambas as plantas.   A bioturbação causada pela Nereis diversicolor alterou a distribuição vertical de Zn, Cu, Cd e Pb no sedimento de forma diferente do observado para as plantas. O estudo da bioturbação por este poliqueta através das razões dos isótopos estáveis de Pb permitiu concluir que estes organismos transportam partículas de sedimento de zonas mais profundas para a superfície. Esta actividade foi classificada como “upward conveyor” de acordo com as classes previstas por Michaud et al., 2006. Cores of sediments colonized and non-colonized by those plants were collected and depth variation (2-cm resolution) of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb concentrations were determined. Stable lead isotopes were also studied and the ratios 206Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/208Pb determined in depth. The same parameters were also quantified in aboveground and belowground biomass of plants. The metal concentrations in belowground material were 1 to 3 orders of magnitude greater than levels in aboveground plant parts providing evidence of weak upward translocation. Colonized sediments present higher levels of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb in than non-colonized sediments. Depth profiles of 206Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/208Pb showed a decrease towards the surface as a result of a higher proportion of anthropogenic Pb components. A similar Pb isotopic signature was found in roots and in vegetated sediments indicating that plants uptake Pb with no distinguish between isotopes with different masses. Enrichment factors (EF=[Me]root/[Me]sediment) were calculated for each sediment layer varying with depth, suggesting the presence of preferential layers of metal accumulation in roots of both plants.   Bioturbation by Nereis diversicolor changed the vertical distribution of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb in the sediment but differently from that performed by plants. The study of bioturbation by stable Pb isotopes leads to the conclusion that this specie moved sediment particles from depth zones to the sediment surface. This activity was classified as “upward conveyor” accordingly to classes established by Michaud et al., 2006.
